If you are looking for a way to add some creative graphics to parts on your truck, then you may want to consider swirl painting your truck cap. Swirl painting is easy to do and a lot of fun. It can be done on metal, plastic, fiberglass, and many other materials. Best of all, it gives you a great-looking final product that can't be duplicated. Follow the instructions detailed below to swirl paint your truck cap.

Gather the supplies you'll be needing

  • The truck cap
  • A plastic pool large enough to easily fit the cap
  • A second person to help you dip the cap (more if it is for a larger truck)
  • Oil based paint in the colors of your choosing
  • Water
  • Tape
  • A stir stick
  • Spray enamel

Prepare your work area

Fill the pool with a lot of water while making sure there is going to also be enough room for you to completely dip the entire cap that you are going to be swirl painting. You want the water to be about room temperature.

Tape the windows

Use tape to tape off the window frames. Getting paint on the windows isn't a big deal since you can clean it off later with a razor blade, but it's easier to protect them. Since the cap will only be submerged for a short amount of time, you don't need to worry about the tape coming off.

Prepare for painting

One you put the water into the pool, let it settle so it's no longer moving. Then, choose your colors and put in the first drops of paint. Hold the paint container right above the water and slowly drop the paint in, a little bit at a time, until you have enough of that color. Move on to the next color and do the same thing. Make sure you have the right amount of all the colors by continuing to add in more drops until you get the desired effect.

Paint the truck cap

Take the stir stick and very slowly stick the point of it in the water, using it to pull the paint around until you get a nice swirl look you think will work best. Take your truck cap, with a second person helping you, and hold it at about a 30-degree angle above the water. Slowly dip it all the way down into the water until the water is covering it completely.

Allow it to dry

Slowly shake the truck cap back and forth a few times to break up any leftover paint still on the surface of the water. Pull the truck cap out and set it right side up to dry completely. Once it has dried, cover it with a clean enamel and allow that to dry.

This is a great way for you to have fun painting your own truck. It will also give you a paint job like no other out there. If you need a truck cap for this project, contact a company like J & C Campers.
